50 Books Challenge 2012 - # 17: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

Title: In Cold Blood
Author: Trumand Capote
Story: On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy.

Comment: The violent murders of Herbert and Bonnie Clutter and their two youngest children: Nancy and Kenyon in 1959 became a media sensation as these violent crimes are wont to do. The first chapter of the book introduces you to the Clutters and we also meet the two men who later turn out to be the killers. The first part is the most interesting part. You get sucked into the story, get to know the family and their killers. It's a creepy idea when you're reading it, because you know they will die. The question is just when and how. The book is divided in four sections: The Last to See Them Alive, Persons Unknown, Answer, and The Corner. Very smart because this separation helped more in following the different events and stages of what happened: (before) the murder, the investigation, the answers, and the conviction. I started out so fast, I couldn't stop reading and I was totally captivated by the story. Somehow I couldn't stay in that mode, because some parts where really slow and long-winded. I admire the research behind this novel. Capote took initiative to get to know the murderers' story, as well as that of the Clutter/investigators and bystanders of the story. It was a good crime story, it didn't feel like a typical non-fiction book.
