50 Books Challenge 2012 - # 15: Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

Title: Under the Tuscan Sun
Author: Frances Mayes
Story: Frances Mayes—widely published poet, gourmet cook, and travel writer—opens the door to a wondrous new world when she buys and restores an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. In evocative language, she brings the reader along as she discovers the beauty and simplicity of life in Italy. Mayes also creates dozens of delicious seasonal recipes from her traditional kitchen and simple garden, all of which she includes in the book. Doing for Tuscany what M.F.K. Fisher and Peter Mayle did for Provence, Mayes writes about the tastes and pleasures of a foreign country with gusto and passion.

Comment: I was really looking forward to reading a story about a woman who threw her whole life around to do something she really wanted. That's what Frances Mayes did, something I really admire about people. Just doing what you really want, no matter what. Unfortunately the books wasn't what I expected it to be. Although Frances Mayes does a wonderful job describing Tuscany and all it entails, after 150 plus pages, I find it hard to concentrate. I think I don't have that connection with Italy or the Italian kitchen. The book couldn't keep my attention and I was glad when I finally finished it. I can understand that this is a loved book, people who share the passion for Italy and cooking will definitely like it. Sadly enough I'm not one of those people.
