50 Books Challenge 2011 - # 44: Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Title: Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist
Author: Rachel Cohn en David Levithan
Story: It all starts when Nick asks Norah to be his girlfriend for five minutes. He only needs five minutes to avoid his ex-girlfriend, who’s just walked in to his band’s show. With a new guy. And then, with one kiss, Nick and Norah are off on an adventure set against the backdrop of New York City—and smack in the middle of all the joy, anxiety, confusion, and excitement of a first date.
Start: august 9th 2011
End: august 11th 2011
Comment: Nick just wanted Norah as his pretend girlfriend for five minutes. This simple "five-minute date" serves as the springboard that takes the couple around New York City on an intense Saturday all-nighter filled with music, shared favorites, exes, weird friends and sexy moments. The book is told from Nick's and Norah's alternating points of view. Levithan wrote Nick's chapters and Cohn did Norah's. That gives both characters enough depth to make them interesting and gives them both their own identity through their narration. I especially loved Norah, a very likeable girl who falls for Nick after they share a kiss. She's not one of those girlie-girls and I like that. She had a very specific taste in music, she's not just another girl. I didn't like Nick at first, because he was so obsessed with Tris, who I couldn't stand at all. I just couldn't understand the fact that he didn't see that Norah was the catch. He kept obsessing about Tris. And I really didn't see him as the very sexy guy Norah describes him as. The book is very sharp edged and I was suprised it was a YA novel. Sex, alcohol and rock 'n roll are all at the forefront of the novel. I enjoyed this book, but it found it a bit creepy that they marked it as teen/ young adult, especially when the sexuel scenes grew more explicit. I'm not a prude at all, but I wouldn't feel comfortable if a 13 year old would read this.
