Story: Paris, July 1942 - Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.
Paris, May 2002 - On Vel’ d’Hiv’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France's past. Comment: In this book we follow two different storylines. First the story of ten year-old Sarah, during the war. And the second one tells the story of Julia, an American journalist who lives in Paris and is intruiged by the story of Sarah. Both stories come together which made it all very believable. De Rosnay wrote a very impressive book, with a theme that most people love reading about. It makes you think about the war and all the dillema's. Especially the beginning of the book is interesting. You're finding out about Sarah and you see how Julia discovers new things about her. Later in the book, it's more focused on Julia and her personal worries. Which draws the attention away from Sarah and that wasn't necessary. The book is easy to read and hard to put down. It is very emotional and dramatic, and a recommendation.
